suburban 的詞源

14世纪初，“城镇或城市的边缘地区，城墙外的区域”，无论是农业还是住宅区，但通常是住宅区，来自古法语 suburbe “城镇的郊区”，源自拉丁语 suburbium “城市的边缘部分”（特别是罗马），来自 sub “下面，靠近”（参见 sub-）+ urbs（属格 urbis）“城市”（参见 urban）。

通常为复数形式。在古英语中被解释为 underburg。郊区位于市政管辖权的边缘，在17世纪英格兰声誉不佳，尤其是伦敦的郊区，suburban 一词具有“低劣，堕落，放荡”的意思（如 suburban sinner，俚语意为“放荡的女人，妓女”）。到1817年，这种色彩转变为“举止低劣和视野狭隘”。也可比较法语对应词 faubourg。
