vernacular 的詞源

約公元1600年，「本地的，土生土長的」，來自拉丁語 vernaculus 「家庭的，土生的，土著的；關於家中出生的奴隸」，源自 verna 「在主人家中出生的奴隸」，在轉義中，「本地人」，據說是伊特魯里亞語起源的詞。

在英語中，它限制於拉丁語 vernacula vocabula 的意義，指一個地方的母語或普通方言。作為名詞，「一個地方的本地語言或語言」，始於1706年。比較 vulgar。Fitzedward Hall（1873年）使用 home-English 來指代本地英語。相關詞： Vernacularism。
