"articulation, membre du corps" (aujourd'hui obsolète ou provincial), vieil anglais liþ "membre, articulation," apparenté au frison ancien lith, néerlandais lid, haut allemand ancien lid, vieux norrois liðr, gothique liþus, et, composé avec ga-, allemand glied "membre, articulation." Lith and limb était une association allitérative en moyen anglais.
