「 alter ego 」の語源

14世紀後半、「（何かを）変える、何らかの方法で異なるものにする」という意味で、古フランス語の alterer 「変える、修正する」、中世ラテン語の alterare 「変える」、ラテン語の alter 「二つのうちのもう一方」、PIE語根 *al- (1) 「超えて」 + 比較接尾辞 -ter （other のように）から派生。自動詞的な意味で「異なるものになる」は1580年代に初めて記録される。関連語： Altered; altering。

1707年までに、形而上学において「自己；感じ、行動、または思考するもの」を意味し、ラテン語のego「私」（古英語のicと同根；Iを参照）から派生。egoityにその使用が暗示されている。

精神分析的（フロイト派）な意味は1894年から；「うぬぼれ」の意味は1891年による。Ego-tripは1969年に証明され、trip（名詞）から派生。関連語：egoical。
