キリスト教の聖典は、ギリシャ語でTa Bibliaと呼ばれていたのは、約223年頃からである。Bibleは古英語のbiblioðece（bibliothecを参照）に取って代わり、「聖書」の普通の言葉となった。「権威ある書物」の比喩的な意味は1804年から。Bible-thumper「厳格なクリスチャン」は1870年から。Bible beltは、当時根本主義的なクリスチャンに支配されていた米国南部の地域を指し、1926年から；おそらくH.L. Menckenによって造語された。
