「 carpetbagger 」の語源

またの名を carpet-bagger、1868年、アメリカ英語、南部連合州の崩壊後に南部に居を構え、私的利益や政治的昇進を求める北部の白人に対する軽蔑的な呼称。この名前は、全ての持ち物を carpetbagに詰め込んで到着する男たちのイメージに基づいている。その後、この意味はその地域外からのあらゆる機会主義者（西部のワイルドキャット銀行家や領土職員など）に対しても拡張された。
