「 decadent 」の語源

「かつての卓越した状態から衰退または decay している状態」、1837年（カーライル）、フランス語の décadent から、décadence（decadence を参照）からの逆成。主に文学（後に他の芸術）運動において、彼らが芸術の衰退期に生きていると信じていた、またはそう装った学校を指し、1885年にフランス語で、1888年に英語で使われるようになった。通常は否定的な意味で使われる：

Bread, supposedly the staff of life, has become one of our most decadent foods — doughy, gummy, and without the aroma, flavor, texture, taste and appearance that is typical of good bread. ["College and University Business" 1960]

「自己 indulgence に対して望ましく満足できる」という意味での肯定的なニュアンスは、1970年頃から商業出版物でデザートに関連して使われ始めた。
