「 democratize 」の語源

「人民による統治、主権が全体の人民に帰属し、直接または選挙された職員によって行使される政府の制度；そのように統治される国家」、1570年代、フランス語のdémocratie（14世紀）から、中世ラテン語のdemocratia（13世紀）から、ギリシャ語のdēmokratia「人民政府」から、dēmos「一般市民」、元々は「地区」（demoticを参照）+ kratos「支配、力」（-cracyを参照）。

16世紀から17世紀にかけてラテン語化された形democratieで時々使用された。19世紀のイングランドでは「世襲やその他の地位を持たない人々の階級、一般市民」を指すことがあった。19世紀のアメリカ政治では「民主党の原則や党員」を意味することがあった。
