「 denature 」の語源

13世紀後半、「身体の修復力、身体のプロセス; 成長の力」という意味で、古フランス語のnature「自然、生きること、生命の原理; 特性、エッセンス」から、ラテン語のnatura「物事の進行; 自然の特性、構成、質; 宇宙」、文字通り「誕生」、natus「生まれた」、動詞nasci「生まれる」の過去分詞（印欧祖語のルート*gene-「出産する、繁殖する」から）から。

14世紀中頃には「物質世界の力またはプロセス; 生物を生み出し秩序を維持するもの」として使われ、14世紀後半には「創造、宇宙」としても使われた。また「遺伝、誕生、 hereditary circumstances; 本質的特性、固有の構成、先天的性質」（例：human nature）や「自然の擬人化、母なる自然」とも。Natureとnurtureはシェイクスピアの「テンペスト」以来、対比されてきた。

「（何かを）変えてその性質を変える行為」という意味で、1845年に使われ始めました。それ以前はフランス語やドイツ語で見られます。denature（変性させる）という動詞に、名詞を作る接尾辞 -ation（～すること）が付いてできた言葉です。

英語およびフランス語やラテン語から引き継いだ多くの動詞における能動的な詞形成要素で、ラテン語の de「下に、下から、から、離れて；関する」（deを参照）から来ており、ラテン語では接頭辞としても使われ、通常「下に、離れて、の中から、下から」を意味しますが、「底まで、完全に」つまり「完全に」（強調または完了）を意味することもあり、これが多くの英単語における意味です。

ラテン語の接頭辞としては、動詞の行動を元に戻したり逆にしたりする機能もあり、それゆえ「不、反対のことをする、元に戻す」という純粋な否定語として使われるようになり、これは英語での生きた接頭辞としての主な機能です。例として defrost（1895年）、defuse（1943年）、de-escalate（1964年）などがあります。いくつかの場合には dis- の短縮形です。
