14世紀後半、「固定された位置に」という意味で、オールドフレンチのdormant（12世紀）から、dormir「眠る」の現在分詞形で、ラテン語のdormire「眠る」から、PIEルート*drem-「眠る」(古代教会スラヴ語のdremati「眠る、まどろむ」、ギリシャ語のedrathon「私は眠った」、サンスクリット語のdrati「眠る」の由来)。
「休息状態にあり、前足に頭を置いて横たわっている」（紋章学における獣の表現）は1500年頃から。「眠っている、眠る」は1620年代から。「休息または非活動状態にある」の一般的な意味は1600年頃から。火山については1760年から。
