「 medicine man 」の語源

「北アメリカの先住シャーマン」という言葉が使われるようになったのは、1801年頃からで、これは先住民の言葉において medicine という単語が「魔法の影響」や「治癒力や超自然的、神秘的な力を持つとされるもの」という意味で取り入れられたことに起因しています。アメリカとカナダの国境は Medicine Line（1880年に証明）と呼ばれていました。なぜなら、この線を越えることで一種の魔法のような保護が得られると考えられていたからです。つまり、片方で犯した罪は、もう片方に渡ることで罰を逃れられるとされていたのです。これは中英語における medicine の「道徳的、心理的、社会的な治療法」や「護り、防御」といった二次的な意味での使用と比較できます。

Unless some understanding is arrived at between the American and Canadian Governments that offenders may be promptly and vigorously dealt with, I very much fear that killing and stealing will increase to such an extent that the country along the border will be scarcely habitable. When the Indians are made to understand that the mere fact of "hopping" across the line does not exempt them from punishment, there will be a much greater guarantee of their good behaviour. このようにして medicine bag（「治癒力や魔法の力を持つとされる物を入れた袋。北アメリカの先住民が身につけるもの」）という表現も生まれました（1802年）。
