「 phenomenal 」の語源

1570年代、「直接観察された事実、見えるまたは認識されるもの、出来事」、特に特定の機会に観察される定期的な種類の事実として、後期ラテン語のphænomenon、ギリシャ語のphainomenon「見えるもの」から、phainesthai「現れる」の中性現在分詞の名詞用法、受動態のphainein「明らかにする、現れる原因を作る、見せる」（印欧語根*bha- (1)「輝く」から）から。1771年に「非凡な出来事」という意味が記録される。哲学では、1788年に「経験の外観または即座の対象」とされる。複数形はphenomena。

「現象だけが現実であり、知識の対象であるという哲学的な教義や考え方」、1856年にキリスト教の文脈で（materialismに対抗して）使われました。これは、phenomenal（現象的な）+ -ism（主義）から派生しています。同じ意味で以前に使われていたのは、phenomenism（現象主義、1830年）です。関連語としては、Phenomenalist（現象主義者、1856年）があります。
