1300年頃、philosophie、「知識、学習、学問、学術的な作品、知識体系」の意味で、古フランス語のfilosofie「哲学、知識」（12世紀、現代フランス語ではphilosophie）およびラテン語のphilosophia、さらにギリシャ語のphilosophia「知識を愛すること、知恵の探求；体系的な調査」、philo-「愛する」（philo-を参照）+ sophia「知識、知恵」、sophis「賢い、学識のある」から派生した、語源不明の言葉です [Beekes]。中英語では多くのスペルの変異（filozofie, phelosophieなど）があります。
14世紀中頃から「合理的な推測や瞑想を扱う学問」として、14世紀後半からは「自然科学」とも「錬金術、神秘知識」とも理解されました。中世ではこの言葉はすべての投機的な科学を包含するものと考えられていました。「人が生活を導くために形成する体系」という意味は1771年から証明されています。「最高の真理の体系、最も基本的な事柄の科学」という現代の意味は1794年からです。
