「 pleather 」の語源

古英語の leðer（複合語のみで使用）は、「なめされたり、他の方法で加工された動物の皮や毛皮」を意味し、これは原始ゲルマン語の *lethran（古ノルド語の leðr、古フリジア語の lether、古ザクセン語の lethar、中オランダ語・オランダ語の leder、古高ドイツ語の ledar、現代ドイツ語の Lederの語源）から来ています。また、印欧語族の *letro-（古アイルランド語の lethar、ウェールズ語の lledr、ブルトン語の lezrも同様の語源）に由来し、「革」を意味していました。形容詞としての使用は14世紀初頭から見られ、1980年代には「サドマゾヒスティック（SM的）」という二次的な意味を持つようになりました。この新しい意味は、1970年代に同性愛者の専門用語として定着しました。

In commercial and popular usage leather does not include skins dressed with the hair or fur on: such skins are usually distinguished by compounding the word skin with the name of the animal from which they are taken: as sealskin, bearskin, otter skin, etc. In the untanned state skins valued for their fur, hair, or wool and destined to be tawed and dressed for furriers' and analogous uses, are called pelts or peltry.
