「 rum 」の語源

「サトウキビやモラセスのジュースから蒸留された酒」、1650年代。おそらくrumbullion（1651年）、rombostion（1652年）という不明な起源の言葉の短縮形で、rum（形容詞）「優れた、素晴らしい、良い、価値のある」に疑いがかかる。rum bouse「良い酒」というフレーズは1560年代から17世紀にかけて証明されている。この英語の単語は、オランダ語、ドイツ語、スウェーデン語、デンマーク語、スペイン語、ポルトガル語、イタリア語、フランス語、ロシア語に借用された。

In the Library of Trinity College, Dublin, is a manuscript entitled "A briefe description of the Island of Barbados." It is undated but from internal evidence it must have been written about the year 1651. In describing the various drinks in vogue in Barbados, the writer says : "The chief fudling they make in the Island is Rumbullion alias Kill-Divill, and this is made of sugar canes distilled, a hot, hellish, and terrible liquor. Rumは、1800年頃から北アメリカで酩酊飲料の一般的（敵対的な）名称として使用され、したがってrum-runnerや多くの禁酒法時代のスラングが生まれた。

「優れた、素晴らしい、良い、価値のある」、1560年代の詐欺師のスラング。また、ロマ語のrome「素晴らしい」に由来するとされ、ロマ語のrom「男性、夫」（Romanyを参照）。16世紀の非常に一般的な詐欺師の言葉（queerに対して）、例えばrum kicks「金または銀のブロケード、または金または銀で豪華に装飾されたズボン」[Grose, "Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue," 1785]のように。
