Hercynian 어원

1580년대, 고전적인 용어로 고대 독일의 숲으로 덮인 산맥을 가리키는 모호한 표현이었으며, 특히 das Harzgebirge를 지칭했습니다. 이는 라틴어 hercynia (silva) "헤르퀴니아 숲"에서 유래되었고, 그리스어 herkynios (drymos)와 관련이 있으며, 아마도 고대 켈트어 *perkunya에서 비롯된 것으로, 인도유럽조어 *perq(o)- "참나무, 참나무 숲, 숲이 우거진 산"을 의미했습니다 (자세한 내용은 fir를 참조하세요).

Pliny, who was well acquainted with Germany, gives a very striking description of the Hercynian forest. "The vast trees of the Hercynian forest, untouched for ages, and as old as the world, by their almost immortal destiny exceed common wonders. Not to mention circumstances which would not be credited, it is certain that hills are raised by the repercussion of their meeting roots; and where the earth does not follow them, arches are formed as high as the branches, which, struggling, as it were, with each other, are bent into the form of open gates, so wide, that troops of horse may ride under them."
