"트윌드 면직물," 15세기 중반, Geayne, Gene fustian의 약어로, 프랑스어 jean fustian "제노바의 푸스티안 (트윌드 면직물의 일종)"에서 유래, 이탈리아 도시 제노바에서, 고대 프랑스어 Jannes "제노바"에서, 라틴어 Genua에서 유래 (참조 Genoa). 15세기 영국에서 유통된 제노바의 작은 은전 이름인 jane와 비교. 복수형 jeans는 19세기 중반까지 표준이 되었다. "청바지로 만든 바지"라는 의미는 1908년에 입증되었으며, 1959년부터 청소년의 특징으로 언급되었다. 원래 파란색이 아니었다.
