“중세 무예의 대회, 토너먼트,” c. 1200, tournement, (비유적, 영적 경쟁의 경우; c. 1300, 문자적), 고대 프랑스어 tornement “기사들이 말에 올라 용기의 상을 위해 겨루는 대회” (12세기), tornoier “투기하다, 기울다, 토너먼트에 참가하다” (참조 tourney (v.))에서 유래.

Tournaments and jousts differed from one another principally in the circumstance that in the first several combatants on each side were engaged at once, and in the second the contention was between two combatants only.
