-escence 的詞源

1852年，英國數學家和物理學家喬治·斯托克斯爵士（1819-1903）創造了“在紫外線下發光的特性”一詞，他從 fluorspar（見 fluorine）中首次注意到這種現象，加上 -escence，類比於 phosphorescence。

1884年，德國物理學家艾爾哈德·維德曼（1852-1928）創造了這個詞，源自拉丁語 lumen（屬格 luminis）“光”（來自 PIE 詞根 *leuk- “光，亮度”的後綴形式）+ -escence。
