commence 的詞源

13世紀末，“開始，進入存在的行爲或事實”，來自古法語 comencement “開始，起點”（現代法語 commencement），源自 comencier “開始，啓動”（見 commence）。

1850年，美國英語中出現了“學校畢業典禮”的意思，最初指的是大學的典禮，指畢業班成員成爲學士、碩士等（commencement 在“進入大學碩士或博士特權”的意義上是來自14世紀末的）； 然後擴展到學院和低年級學校的畢業典禮。
