14世紀末，源自12世紀的古法語 eloquence，源自拉丁語 eloquentia，源自 eloquentem（主格 eloquens）的"雄辯"，現在分詞形式 eloqui 的"說出"，源自 ex 的"出"（參見 ex-），加上 loqui 的"說"（源自 PIE 詞根 *tolkw- 的"說"）。同樣的意思在14世紀中葉已經存在了 eloquency。
