elsewhere 的詞源

「在任何地方，無論何處」，這是中古英語的 wher，源自古英語的 hwær、hwar，意指「在什麼地方」。它來自原始日耳曼語的副詞 *hwar（同源於古薩克森語 hwar、古北歐語 hvar、古弗里西語 hwer、中古荷蘭語 waer、古高地德語 hwar、德語 wo、哥特語 hvar，皆意為「哪裡」）。這相當於拉丁語的 cur，源自原始印歐語詞根 *kwo-，用於關係代詞和疑問代詞。

Where it's at 最早出現於1903年，意指「事物的真實或本質特性」，到1971年則用來表示「活動的中心地點」。

多年來，它出現在許多介詞和副詞的複合詞中。除了已列出的條目（如 whereas、wherefore、whereabouts 等），英語還有或曾經有 whereagainst, wherehence, whereinsoever, whereinto, wheremid, whereout, whereover, wheresoever, whereunder，以及 whereuntil, wherewhile。
