filth 的詞源

古英語 ful"腐爛的，不潔的，卑鄙的，腐敗的，令人不快的"，源自原始日耳曼語 *fulaz（也源自古撒克遜語和古弗裏西語 ful，中古荷蘭語 voul，荷蘭語 vuil，古高地德語 fül，德語 faul，哥特語 füls），源自原始印歐語 *pu-（2）"腐爛，腐敗"，也許是由於聞到臭味而發出的聲音（見 pus）。

The expression is related to, and may well derive from, an old joke. A man in a crowded bar needed to defecate but couldn't find a bathroom, so he went upstairs and used a hole in the floor.
