listenable 的詞源

大約在公元1200年，listenen這個詞出現，來自list（動詞第二義）「聽，傾聽」，可能也源自古英語的hlysnan（美洲方言）、lysna（北umbrian方言）「聆聽，聽見；注意，服從」（及物動詞）。這些詞都可以追溯到原始日耳曼語的*hlusinon（同源於荷蘭語的luisteren，古高地德語的hlosen「聆聽」，德語的lauschen「傾聽」），而這又源自印歐語根*kleu-「聽」。

這個不及物動詞的用法從公元1200年左右開始出現。listen in（1905年）最初是指收聽無線電廣播。

在拉丁語中，-abilis和-ibilis取決於動詞的屈折元音。因此在古法語、西班牙語、英語中有變體形式-ible。在英語中，-able傾向於用於本土（和其他非拉丁語）詞彙，-ible則用於明顯的拉丁語來源詞（但也有例外）。拉丁語後綴在詞源上與able無關，但長期以來一直與其有流行的聯繫，這可能促成了它作為一個活躍後綴的活力。
