normalcy 的詞源

1857年，“直角的數學條件，幾何學中的正常狀態或事實”，源自 normal + -cy。自1920年以來，這個詞與美國總統沃倫·G·哈定（他在那一年的競選口號是“迴歸正常”，意思是第一次世界大戰前的情況）有關。以前 normalcy 主要用於數學意義上，而“正常情況”的純粹主義者更喜歡用 normality 這個詞。哈定在任期內使用這個詞被嘲笑爲他那些被人輕視的語言無能的例子（民主黨政治家威廉·G·麥克阿杜·朱尼爾稱哈定的演講爲“一個自大的短語軍隊在尋找一個想法的景象”）。
