古英語中的 ald（盎格魯方言）、eald（西撒克遜語、肯特方言）意指「古老的，源於古代的，屬於古代的，原始的；存在或使用已久的；接近正常壽命的末期；年長的，成熟的，富有經驗的」。這個詞源自原始日耳曼語 *althaz，意為「長大成人的，成人的」（同源詞還有古弗里西語的 ald，哥特語的 alþeis，荷蘭語的 oud，德語的 alt）。最初，它是一個動詞的過去分詞詞幹，意指「生長，滋養」（可參見哥特語的 alan「長大」，古諾爾斯語的 ala「滋養」），來自原始印歐語根 *al- (2)「生長，滋養」。這個詞的原始元音在蘇格蘭語中保留至今，變為 auld，在 alderman 中也可見其蹤影。原始的比較級和最高級形式（elder, eldest）在某些特定用法中得以保留。

通常情況下，表達「年老」的印歐語根是 *sen-（參見 senior（形容詞））。一些印歐語系語言區分「老」（對比年輕）和「舊」（對比新）的詞彙，還有一些語言專門用來形容年長的人，而非物品。拉丁語中的 senex 通常用來形容年長的生物，主要是人類，而 vetus（字面意思是「經歷了很多年」）則多用於無生命的物體。希臘語的 geraios 主要用於形容人類；而 palaios 則多用於物品，對人類的使用多帶有貶義。希臘語中還有 arkhaios，字面意思是「屬於開始」，與法語的 ancien 相似，後者主要用來指「昔日的事物」。

Old age「高齡期」的表達出現於14世紀初。Old Testament的用法可追溯至14世紀中期（在晚期古英語中被稱為 old law）。Old lady「妻子，母親」的用法出現於約1775年（但可與古英語的 seo ealde hlæfdige「王太后」對比）。Old man「長壽者」的表達出現於晚期古英語；其「丈夫，父親，老闆」的意義則始於1854年，早期（1830年）作為軍事俚語意指「指揮官」；old boy作為親暱稱呼出現於約1600年。Old days「往昔」的表達出現於晚期古英語；old time「過去的時光」則出現於14世紀晚期；good old days「被認為比現在更美好的往昔」，有時帶有諷刺意味，出現於17世紀70年代。Old Light（形容詞）在宗教中意指「支持舊信仰或原則」，出現於1819年。

1807年，“杜松子酒；杜松子酒的拟人化。”在较早的用法中可以指任何杜松子酒，但后来特指一种传统的甜杜松子酒，是伦敦干型杜松子酒的前身。

这个名字的原因不清楚。1807年的用法来自一首关于“Old Tom”的滑稽歌曲，他是“Peg Juniper”的儿子，当他死后，被放进一个桶里，桶被用来盛杜松子酒。
