15世紀初，“多毛的，毛茸茸的，刺狀的”，源自拉丁語 horridus “多刺的，刺狀的，粗糙的，可怕的，粗魯的，野蠻的，未經修飾的”，源自 horrere “因恐懼而發抖，發抖”（見 horror）。意思“可怕的，引起恐懼的”始於1600年左右。17世紀，意思減弱爲“不愉快的，令人反感的”。
