silent film 的詞源

到1908年，這個詞專門用來指那些沒有錄音的電影，與talking pictures（有聲電影）相對。根據卡爾·赫伯特在《活動影像世界》1909年3月20日的文章《有聲電影的真相》中的描述，這類電影主要有三種表現形式：一是播放與電影同步的留聲機錄音，二是現場演員在放映屏幕後即興表演，為畫面上的內容創作「或多或少可信的對話」，三是演員朗讀專門為電影準備的對話。
