skunk 的詞源

北美常見的類似黃鼠狼的哺乳動物，當受到威脅時會散發出難聞的氣味，1630年代， squunck，源自南新英格蘭的阿爾岡昆語（可能是 Massachusett）單詞，源自 Proto-Algonquian */šeka:kwa/，源自 */šek-/ 的“小便” + */-a:kw/ 的“狐狸” [布賴特]。

在歐洲人中，他們有時以他們的 polecat 命名，臭鼬是最早被注意和描述的北美動物之一。薩加德-特奧達的“Histoire du Canada”（1636年）將其介紹給了自然學家，稱其爲“enfans du diable, que les Hurons appelle Scangaresse, ... une beste fort puante”，等等。
