sox 的詞源

"襪子，短襪，編織或織造的腳部覆蓋物"，中古英語 sok，源自古英語 socc "拖鞋，輕便鞋"，源自拉丁語 soccus "拖鞋，輕便低跟鞋"，可能是希臘語 sykkhos 的變體，表示一種鞋子，也許來自弗裏吉亞語或其他亞洲語言。Beekes 指出了一種來源，即“假設從高加索借來，也可以在 Av[estan] haxa- [n.] '腳底'中找到...." 拉丁詞彙在西日耳曼語中被借用（中古荷蘭語 socke，荷蘭語 sok，古高地德語 soc，德語 Socke）。

還指古代喜劇演員穿的輕便鞋，因此，在短語中， sock 表示“喜劇”，與“悲劇”（由 buskin 代表）不同。記錄於1845年的美國英語俚語 knock the socks off （徹底打敗某人）； 1919年的口語 put a sock in it （閉嘴）； 青少年俚語 sock hop （跳無鞋舞）約於1950年。

“Bobby socks”（短襪）也稱爲 bobby socks，起源於1943年，是由 bob（名詞2）的愛稱和 sox（襪子）組成的縮小版。因爲與長及膝蓋的襪子相比，它們被“縮短”了。派生詞 bobby-soxer 指“青少年女孩”，尤其是指流行歌手的粉絲，最早見於1944年。
