stillbirth 的詞源

公元1200年前後，“出生的事實”； 13世紀中期，“分娩的行爲，母親通過生育帶來的生產，生孩子”，有時在中古英語中也指“概念”，還表示“所生之物，後代，兒童”，來源於斯堪的納維亞語源，如古諾爾斯語 *byrðr（替換了同源的古英語 gebyrd 的“分娩、血統、種族、後代、本性、命運”），來自原始日耳曼語 *gaburthis（源頭還包括古弗裏西語 berd，古撒克遜語 giburd，荷蘭語 geboorte，古高地德語 giburt，德語 geburt 和哥特語 gabaurþs），來自 PIE 語言學中意“攜帶； 生育孩子”的源詞 *bher-（1）的過去分詞 *bhrto（並比較動詞 bear）。

日耳曼語後綴 -th 可作爲“過程”的意思（如在 bath 和 death 中）。“一個人所出生的狀況、家族、血統”一詞最早於公元1200年被提及（它也在古英語中出現過）。與非生物有關的，“任何形成”的含義始於1610年代。Birth control 成爲一個術語，見於1914年； birth certificate 在1842年開始被使用。
