stillborn 的詞源

古英語 boren，是 beran 的另一種過去分詞形式（參見 bear（動詞））。中古英語過去分詞的 -en 在某些動詞中傾向於省略 -e-，特別是在元音後面， -r-，和 -l-，因此也有 slain 等，中古英語的 stoln。"在現代用法中，與 bear 的聯繫已不再被感知； 短語 to be born 已經幾乎成爲不及物動詞" [OED]。

早在14世紀就有"從出生時就具有所描述的特徵或品質"（born poet， born loser 等）的記錄。從1710年開始有"天生的，遺傳的"的意思； 口語表達 in (one's) born days "在（某人的）一生中"出現於1742年。born 與 borne（詳見）的區別出現在17世紀。

古英语 stille “静止的，稳定的，固定的，静态的”，来自原始日耳曼语 *stilli-（也源自古弗里西语，中低德语，中荷兰语 stille，荷兰语 stil，古高德语 stilli，德语 still），来自 PIE 词根 *stel- “放置，站立，整理”，其派生词指代站立的物体或地点。

“安静，平静，温和，沉默”的意义在后期古英语中出现。从1722年起用作连词。在提到孩子时，作为“死”的委婉语出现在 stillborn等词中。Still small voice 来自KJV：
