welterweight 的詞源

中古英語 weght，來自古英語 wiht，gewiht「重量，物體的向下作用力，物理性質的重性」，源自原始日耳曼語 *wihti-（同源於古諾爾斯語 vætt，丹麥語 vegt，古弗里西語 wicht，中古荷蘭語 gewicht，德語 Gewicht），來自 *weg-（參見 weigh）。

到14世紀中期作為「因其重量而使用的金屬片」（fishing-weight，等等）。「負擔」的比喻意義出現於14世紀晚期。1510年代起用於指鐘錶的配重。

到14世紀晚期作為「一個人所稱重的東西」；lose weight「變瘦」，指人，記載於1858年。Weight Watcher作為商標名稱始於1960年。

「重要性」的意義出現於1520年代。比喻地throw (one's) weight around始於1922年。Weight-training始於1945年。Weight-lifting始於1885年；lift weights用於鍛煉或肌肉發展始於1907年；weight-lifter（人）始於1893年。
