Cugino con il secondo elemento in tedesco Gedächtnis "memoria," Andacht "attenzione, devozione," Bedacht "considerazione, deliberazione."

Bammesberger ("English Etymology") spiega che nel germanico -kt- generalmente si spostava a -ht-, e una nasale prima di -ht- veniva persa. Proto-germanico *thankija- aggiungeva un suffisso -t nel passato. Secondo il primo schema la forma germanica era *thanht-, secondo il secondo l'antico inglese era þoht.

L'OED cita sia Walt Whitman che Emily Dickinson che lo scrivono thot. Un minor o inferiore nel 19° secolo potrebbe essere un thoughtlet (1846), thoughtling (1848), o thoughtkin (1867),

Second thought "considerazione successiva" è registrato dagli anni '40 del 1600. Thought-crime è da "Nineteen Eighty-Four" (1949); thought police è attestato dal 1945, originariamente in riferimento alla Polizia Speciale Superiore Giapponese durante la guerra (Tokubetsu Koto Keisatsu).
