「 conspicuous 」の語源

1540年代、「視界に入る、目を引く」という意味で、ラテン語のconspicuus「可視の、視界に開かれた；注目を引く、印象的な」から、conspicere「見る、観察する、注意する、気づく」から、com-の同化形、ここではおそらく強調接頭辞（com-を参照）+ specere「見る」（PIEルート*spek-「観察する」から）に由来。

「心に明らかで、注意を引く」という意味は1610年代から；それゆえ「著名な、顕著な、優れた」。関連語：Conspicuously; conspicuousness。フレーズconspicuous by its absence（1859年）はタキトゥスの「年代記」iii.76からで、特定の像についての一節で言われている："sed præfulgebant ... eo ipso quod effigies eorum non visebantur."

Conspicuous consumption「名声を高めるための派手な支出」は、1895年にノルウェー系アメリカ人の経済学者・社会学者ソースティン・ヴェブレンの著作に証明され、彼の「余暇階級の理論」（1899年）で有名になった。

Not only must wealth be possessed, but there must be a show of its possession. It must be made obvious to all that there is an inexhaustible reserve. Hence leisure must be made conspicuous by "conspicuous consumption" and "conspicuous waste." If only enough persons and the right persons could see it and know it, it would be highly honorific to light a cigar occasionally with a thousand-dollar bill. A man must not limit his consumption to himself and his family. He must live in a palace many times larger than he can possibly fill, and have a large retinue of servants and retainers, ostensibly to minister to his wants, but really to make clear his ability to pay.
