「 covetous 」の語源

13世紀中頃、「過度に取得し所有したい、強欲な」、古フランス語 coveitos 「欲望に満ちた、強欲な」（12世紀、現代フランス語 convoiteux）、俗ラテン語 *cupiditosus から、ラテン語 cupiditas 「情熱的な欲望、熱意、野心」から、cupidus 「非常に欲望に満ちた」から、cupere 「切望する、欲する」（cupidityを参照）。14世紀後半からは良い意味で「非常に欲望に満ちた、取得したいと思う」として使われるようになった。関連語: Covetously; covetousness。

COVETOUSNESS. The desire of possessing more than we have, of any good thing whatsoever of which we have already enough for our uses, (adding house to house, and field to field). It is much connected with pride ; but more with restlessness of mind and desire of novelty ; much seen in children who tire of their toys and want new ones.
