15世紀初、dissemblen、「虚偽の外見を装う; 実際の事実、動機、意図などを隠す; 自分自身についての真実を覆い隠す」を意味し、古フランス語のdessembler、ラテン語のdissimulare「似ていないものにする、隠す、偽装する」から派生し、dis-「完全に」（dis-を参照）+ simulare「似せる、模倣する、コピーする、表現する」から、similis「似ている、類似の、同種の」（similarを参照）の語幹から。関連語: Dissembled; dissembling。
形式はおそらくresemble、古フランス語のresemblerの影響で変更された。以前は中英語のdissimule、古フランス語のdissimulerだった。他動詞の「似ていないものにする、偽装する」という意味は1500年頃から、「虚偽の印象を与える」という意味は1510年代から。
To dissemble is to pretend that a thing which is is not: as, to dissemble one's real sentiments. To simulate is to pretend that a thing which is not is: as, to simulate friendship. To dissimulate is to hide the reality or truth of something under a diverse contrary appearance: as, to dissimulate one's poverty by ostentation.
