「 fin de siecle 」の語源

1890年にフランス語の fin de siècle、「世紀の終わり」という意味のフレーズから派生した言葉で、形容詞として使われました。当時は「現代的」という意味でしたが、現在では「1890年代の」という意味で使われています。この言葉が初めてタイトルに使われたのは、1890年2月にジムナーズ劇場で上演された喜劇 Paris fin de siècle だと言われています [Weekley]。フランス語の siècle（世紀、時代）は、ラテン語の saeculum（時代、期間、世代）に由来しており、これは secular（世俗的）という言葉とも関連しています。
