「 fourth estate 」の語源

「報道機関」という言葉が1824年には、特に1831年以降のイギリス英語で使われるようになりました。他の三つの意味については、estateを参照してください。以前は「暴徒」（1752年）や「弁護士」（1825年）など、定着しなかったさまざまな意味で使われていましたが、報道機関への拡張はおそらく前者から派生したものです。

Hence, through the light of letters and the liberty of the press, public opinion has risen to the rank of a fourth estate in our constitution; in times of quiet and order, silent and still, but in the collisions of the different branches of our government, deciding as an umpire with unbounded authority.
