「 parenthesis 」の語源

1540年代、「文中に挿入され、文法的に接続されていないが、単語を説明または修飾するための語句、句など」として、フランス語のparenthèse（15世紀）または中世ラテン語のparenthesis「単語内の音節に文字を追加すること」から、ギリシャ語のparenthesis、「横に置くこと」から、parentithenai「横に置く」から、para-「横に」（para- (1)を参照）+ en-「中に」+ tithenai「置く、配置する」（印欧語根*dhe-「置く、配置する」の重複形から）。

1715年までに、挿入された言葉から、印刷業者や作家が挿入された言葉を示すために使用する2つの立っている曲線の括弧（parentheses）へと意味が拡張された。
