「 pipsqueak 」の語源

またの名を pip-squeak、取るに足らない人物に対する軽蔑的な呼び名で、1910年に若いまたは弱い生き物が出す些細な音に由来する。第一次世界大戦では、塹壕を越えてくる小さなドイツの砲弾を「ピップとスクイークの両方の音を立てる」とする兵士の隠語名であった [Farrow, "Dictionary of Military Terms," 1918]。 Pip と Squeak（後に Wilfred も）、愛されるイギリスの漫画の動物たちは、1919年5月に『デイリー・ミラー』の子供向けセクションでデビューした。 squeeze (something) until the pips squeak 「最大限を引き出す」という表現は1918年に証明され、 pip (n.1) から来ている。 

The grossest spectacle was provided by Sir Eric Geddes in the Guildhall at Cambridge. An earlier speech in which, in a moment of injudicious candour, he had cast doubts on the possibility of extracting from Germany the whole cost of the war had been the object of serious suspicion, and he had therefore a reputation to regain. "We will get out of her all you can squeeze out of a lemon and a bit more," the penitent shouted, "I will squeeze her until you can hear the pips squeak" ; his policy was to take every bit of property belonging to Germans in neutral and Allied countries, and all her gold and silver and her jewels, and the contents of her picture-galleries and libraries, to sell the proceeds for the Allies' benefit.
