「 tin-horn 」の語源

また tinhorn、「小規模だが派手な」、1857年、tin (adj.) + horn (n.) から; もともとは低級なギャンブラーに関連していたと言われており、サイコロを振るために使用していたブリキ缶から来ているが、tin (n.) にはすでに「卑劣な、小規模な、価値のない」という二次的な意味があった。そして1830年までにブリキのホーンは安価で騒がしいもの、バグルの模造品または民兵を夕食に呼び寄せる方法やステージコーチの到着を知らせるものとして注目されていた。1844年までにその用語は騒がしい政治的な ranting に適用された。

A person could scarcely walk a block from his house, no matter in what section of the city he lived, without encountering some shaver blowing a tin horn, similar to those used by fishmongers in the peddling of their staple, making the most discordant sounds, to the great discomfort of old ladies and pedantic old gentlemen.
