ambulance 어원

1798년, "이동식 또는 현장 병원"이라는 의미로 프랑스어 ambulance에서 유래되었으며, 이전에는 (hôpital) ambulant (17세기)로, 문자 그대로 "걷는 (병원)"이라는 뜻이었고, 라틴어 ambulantem (주격 ambulans, 현재 분사 ambulare "걷다, 돌아다니다"에서 유래됨 (참조 amble).

AMBULANCE, s. f. a moveable hospital. These were houses constructed in a manner so as to be taken to pieces, and carried from place to place, according to the movements of the army; and served as receptacles in which the sick and wounded men might be received and attended. 이 단어는 1854년 크림 전쟁 중 "현장 병원"에서 "부상자를 현장에서 옮기는 차량"으로 의미가 전이되기 전까지 영어에서 일반적이지 않았다. 20세기 초까지는 민간 생활에서 병자나 부상자를 수송하는 차량으로 확장되었다. 19세기 후반 미국에서는 같은 단어가 방언적으로 "프레리 웨건"을 의미하는 데 사용되었다. Ambulance-chaser라는 경멸적인 변호사 유형에 대한 용어는 1897년에 등장했다.
