commencement 어원

13세기 후반, "존재하게 되는 시작, 행위 또는 사실"이라는 의미로, 고대 프랑스어 comencement "시작, 시작점" (현대 프랑스어 commencement)에서 유래, comencier "시작하다" (참조 commence)에서 파생됨.

"학교 졸업식"이라는 의미는 1850년, 미국 영어에서 입증되었으며, 원래 대학에서 졸업생들이 학사, 석사 등이 되는 의식을 언급하는 것이었다 (대학에서 석사 또는 박사의 특권을 얻는 의식으로서의 commencement는 14세기 후반부터). 그 후 아카데미와 하급 학교의 졸업식으로 확장되었다.
