indispensable 어원

14세기 중반, dispensen, "처리하다, 나누다"라는 의미로, 고대 프랑스어 dispenser "주다" (13세기)에서 유래, 라틴어 dispensare "지출하다, 관리하다, 분배하다 (무게별로)"에서 유래, 이는 dispendere "지출하다"의 반복형으로, dis- "밖으로" (참조 dis-) + pendere "매달리다, 매달리게 하다; 무게를 재다; 지불하다" (PIE 어근 *(s)pen- "끌다, 늘리다, 물레방아를 돌리다"에서)에서 유래.

중세 라틴어에서 dispendere는 "금지된 것을 할 수 있는 허가를 주거나 요구되는 것을 생략하게 하는 것" (교황, 주교 등의 권한)이라는 종교적 의미로 사용되었고, 따라서 "처벌에서 면제해주거나 법에서 면제해주는 것"이라는 의미를 가지게 되었으며, 이는 영어 동사가 "없애다" (1570년대), "없이 지내다" (약 1600년경)라는 의미로 사용되는 이유가 되었다. 더 오래된 의미는 dispensary에 보존되어 있다. 관련: Dispensed; dispensing.
