"병력이나 군함의 계획된 이동," 1757년, 프랑스어 manoeuvre "조작, 기동"에서 유래, 고대 프랑스어 manovre "수작업" (13세기)에서, 중세 라틴어 manuopera (스페인어 maniobra, 이탈리아어 manovra의 출처)에서, manuoperare "손으로 일하다"에서, 라틴어 manu operari에서, manu, 라틴어 manus의 탈격 "손" (PIE 어근 *man- (2) "손"에서) + operari "일하다, 작업하다" (PIE 어근 *op- "일하다, 풍부하게 생산하다"에서)에서 유래.
