optometry 어원

"시야의 범위를 측정하는 것; 일반적인 시각 능력을 측정하는 것," 1886년, optometer (1738)에서 유래, 시력을 검사하는 기계에 붙여진 이름으로, opto-는 '시력'을 의미하며, 그리스어 optos는 '보이는, 가시적인' (인도유럽조어 뿌리 *okw- '보다'에서) + -metry는 '측정하는 것'을 의미함. 아마도 프랑스어 optométrie의 영향을 받았을 것임.

When I made the foregoing Experiments, I designed to repeat them with more Care and Exactness, and to make some new ones of the same Sort, by means of an Instrument I had contrived for that Purpose; which from its Use in measuring the Limits of distinct Vision, and in determining with great Exactness the Strength and Weakness of Sight, may be called an Optometer.
