「拳擊手，拳擊運動員」，這個詞出現於15世紀末，是從動詞 box（意指「拳擊」）衍生的行為名詞。
這種狗的品種（1905年）來自德語 Boxer（因為這種犬最早起源於德國），而這個詞又源自英語 boxer，意指「戰鬥者」，因為這種狗性格好鬥。

這個名字之前也曾用作狗的名字。Boxer shorts（1943年）之所以如此命名，是因為它們與拳擊場上運動員穿的服裝相似。
