Mongol 的詞源

“强大的人”，1670年代，来自 Great Mogul（1580年代），欧洲人对印度蒙古皇帝的普遍称呼，源自1520年代征服后的波斯语和阿拉伯语 mughal， mughul，对 Mongol（参见）的变体，指亚洲民族。作为最高质量扑克牌的名称，1742年之前，因其背面的设计而得名。

1738年（形容詞）“蒙古的； ”1839年（名詞）“蒙古語”，1846年“蒙古人； ”源自 Mongol + -ian。作爲亞洲人種（包括中國人、日本人、土耳其人、越南人、拉普人、愛斯基摩人等）的種族分類，“屬於黃皮膚直髮型人類”[OED]在 J.F. Blumenbach 的系統中，1825年在他的著作翻譯中出現了英文詞彙。

1868年，作爲種族指稱的形容詞和名詞，字面意義上是“類似於蒙古人”，源自於 Mongol 和 -oid 的結合。可與 Mongolian 作比較。針對導致智力發育遲緩的基因缺陷（mongolism），自1899年起，由於患者的典型面部特徵而得名。請參見 Down's Syndrome。此類人在1866年被稱爲蒙古人 Mongolian。
