古英语 blind “失明的”，也指“黑暗的，笼罩在黑暗中，模糊的；愚蠢的，缺乏心理感知的”，可能来自原始日耳曼语 *blindaz “失明的”（也是古弗里西语、古萨克逊语、荷兰语和德语 blind，古诺尔斯语 blindr，哥特语 blinds 的来源），“使模糊，欺骗”的概念，来自印欧语根 *bhel- (1) “闪光，燃烧”的扩展日耳曼语形式。
原始意义不是“失明的”，而是“困惑的”，这可能是 blind alley（1580年代；乔叟的 lanes blynde）等短语的基础，这比“封闭一端” (1610年代) 的意义更早。
